EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). Trauma is complex and rarely one large scale traumatic experience. Trauma can be failed attachment to our caregivers, experiencing abuse/neglect, disturbing events in childhood or adulthood, and/or the inability to protect ourselves emotionally with healthy boundaries. Challenges develop based on how we perceived the event and the internalized negative core beliefs that are formed about ourselves. As an experienced therapist I have found that EMDR is a key part of my practice, given the provided benefits and effectiveness for addressing client’s trauma, depression and/or anxiety.
